Intensive Family Preservation (IFP)
“Keeping families together is what the Family Preservation Program is all about.”
The people we serve:
- Families with children at high risk of being placed in out-of-home care by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) due to abuse and neglect
- Families just reunified following a period of time spent in out-of-home care
- Foster families and/or pre-/post-adoptive families and children in relative care
How the program works:
- IFP is designed to quickly intervene and reduce immediate safety factors and the risk of future neglect and abuse of children.
- Services are intensive and short-term: twice a week for the first four weeks and a minimum of one visit for the remaining weeks of service based on the needs of the family and the length of service being 4-6 months.
Characteristics of IFP:
- All referrals from the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) serving Region 6 New Britain/Meriden DCF offices and surrounding towns
- The program utilizes a strength-based, family-centered, supportive approach
- Services focus on active engagement and support, improving family functioning, parent education, crisis management, connection to needed services, and assistance with obtaining essential concrete needs
- All services are centered in the home and in the community
- Program offers case management services as well as concrete needs, such as securing food, clothing and basic necessities of daily living; and assistance with connecting families to community resources
